Bio: March 31, 2021

A Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter, Jesse Rivest has lived around the world for more than 15 years, crafting original songs that weave through indie folk and Americana (and its roots genres). Aside from the Calgary Folk Music Festival Songwriting Contest once perking up to one of his tunes, his musical journey has remained absent of any acclaim one often encounters in artist bios. In fact, a reader of this bio will be performing a rare act; a listener of his songs serendipitously commits to a path less trodden. However, such journeyers can discover singular narratives, uplifting yet at times bittersweet melodies, grooves that require force to step out from, a fluent baritone and mellifluous falsetto, and modest yet adept guitar playing.

Born in Southampton, Ontario, Rivest's earliest years passed in Stony Plain, Alberta; he recalls hearing Roy Oribison, Traveling Wilburys, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot, among many others. At sixteen he moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, the city and region that he identifies with as home; the soundtrack then included The Tragically Hip, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and some seventies rock. For a few years—before travelling and performing around Australia for a year in 2005—Rivest played in a cover band and at open mics in Calgary, Alberta; imagine The Black Crowes, Wide Mouth Mason, and Big Sugar. From late 2006 until mid 2013, Wellington, New Zealand, was his home away from home, where he befriended the local indie and folk scenes, formed a trio, and released Everyelsewhere EP. In 2013, he moved on to Brazil and studied music for several years, later producing and releasing The D.G.B. EP with school colleagues. As of 2021, he is based in Brasilia, the modernist capital of Brazil, yet makes trips home to Kelowna (pandemic-permitting) to visit family and friends.

2021 sees Rivest releasing several singles while beginning pre-production work for an LP of new songs written in 2020. He can be found regularly posting on Instagram, while less frequent yet important news never slips past his email newsletter (
